Coinciding with Earth Day (April 22), single-use plastic bags are no longer available for customers at Walmart Canada locations across the country, including Tsawwassen and North Delta.

The changes apply to in-store purchases along with online grocery pickup and delivery orders. It will prevent an estimated 680 million plastic bags from entering into circulation each year.

The national roll-out follows a 10-store pilot that began in August 2021. The successful pilot received overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers and associates and diverted nearly six million plastic bags.

“Eliminating plastic shopping bags is a significant milestone on our journey to becoming a regenerative company – and it’s the right thing to do,” said Horacio Barbeito, President and CEO, Walmart Canada.

Walmart joins a number of other Delta businesses in eliminating plastic bags which will soon be city-wide.

Starting June 6, 2022, plastic checkout bags and foam food service ware will be banned under Delta’s Plastic Bags and Single-Use Items Bylaw No. 8075.

The bylaw aims to regulate and reduce the use of single-use plastic bags and foam containers in the community and encourage the use of reusable shopping bags.

Stores will also be required to charge a minimum $0.25 for a paper checkout bag and $2 for a reusable checkout bag.
