The Block Watch program is thriving in Delta, with Block Watch groups in North Delta, Ladner, Tsawwassen and now, the Tsawwassen First Nation.
According to Delta police, there are many benefits to joining the Block Watch program - one being to children, the Block watch sign means that someone is looking out for them.
Block Watch is a community-based crime prevention program that involves community members working with DPD. Participants watch out for each other's homes, and report suspicious activities to the police and to each other.
The Block Watch program was started in B.C. in 1986 in response to the concerns of citizens about crime. The program was modeled on a similar project in Seattle which was effective in reducing residential break and enters by up to 60 per cent.
Block Watch encourages neighbours to work together to enhance the quality of life in their community by reducing and preventing crime.
