The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. Oct. 18, 1100 Tsatsu Shores Drive:  Complainant reported they received an email from a person claiming to be an employee of Norton Security indicating there was a problem with their security.  The complainant gave the caller access to their computer in order to “assist” with the account.  The caller indicated there was an error in the computer system and to send $40,000 to Thailand to correct the error.  When the caller went to the bank they discovered they were the victim of fraud.  No money changed hands and the complainant advised TransUnion, Equifax and the Canadian Ant-Fraud Centre of the fraud.  The complainant had a reputable security company scan and wipe their computer.

Oct. 19, 5500 Block of 9th Avenue:  Report received from the Boys and Girls Club that graffiti had been sprayed on the north side of the building sometime during the night.  Police attended and photographed the graffiti which read “THC” twice in black spray paint.  A similar incident had occurred on October 11 and the police are awaiting surveillance video depicting several male teenagers who had allegedly committed this offence.

Oct. 19, HQ 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent:  Complainant received a text from someone purporting to be from “BC Hydro” indicating they had overpaid their last bill.  The complainant accessed the link in the text and provided their banking information before they realized they were the victim of fraud.  Complainant contacted their bank but three fraudulent e-transfers had already been sent for a total of $2042.  Complainant changed passwords with the bank and contacted TransUnion and Equifax.   Fraud still under investigation by the bank for possible reimbursement. 

Oct. 21, HQ 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent:  Complainant reported an attempt was made to open a credit account in their name using an old address.  The complainant has contacted the credit bureaus and banks who have flagged their accounts and will continue to monitor any usual activity. 

Oct. 21, 5600 Block of Sherwood Blvd:  Complainant reported they listed a MacBook Air for sale on Marketplace and an agreement to purchase was made.  The suspect indicated they would send payment of $580 once they received notification of shipment.  The item was shipped through Canada Post but no payment received by the complainant.  Several strange emails were received by the complainant from the suspect requesting the use of bitcoins.  The complainant realizing they were the victim of fraud requested a police file for Canada Post in order to request a stop shipment of the laptop.  Police requested the complainant to forward suspicious emails and information regarding the suspect for investigation.

Oct. 23, 9A Avenue & 53A Street:  A citizen turned in a brown leather wallet found in Tsawwassen.  The wallet contained BC Learner’s License, bank and student cards.  Police were able to locate the owner of the wallet who upon identification claimed the wallet.  When the wallet was picked up the owner noted that $400 that was in the lost wallet was missing.  Records indicate the wallet did not have cash of any denomination in it when turned in to Police Headquarters.

Oct. 20, HQ 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent:  A citizen turned in a black leather men’s wallet found on the floor of the sheltered picnic area in Deas Island Regional Park.  Police able to identify a possible owner and a voicemail left requesting the owner contact the police.  The owner claimed the wallet upon verification of their identity.

Oct. 22, HQ 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent:  Complainant reported the loss of the rear BC License plate from a transport truck belonging to their employer.  Information regarding the lost plate added to the Canadian Police Information Centre System.  Report made for insurance purposes.

Oct. 22, 5100 Block of Ladner Trunk Road:  Complainant reported they dropped their blue leather women’s style wallet in front of the supermarket and when they returned to look for the wallet it was gone.  Contents of the wallet include a BC Driver’s License, SIN Card, credit and debit cards, and $200 cash.  Bank cards cancelled and the complainant to contact Service Canada and ICBC.

Oct. 23, 4400 Block of Arthur Drive:  A citizen contacted police indicating they had observed a vehicle swerving and braking randomly and believed the driver may be impaired.  Police located the vehicle and determined the driver was not impaired but advised they were lost.  Police provided the driver with directions to their destination.
