South Delta Crime Beat: CBS arrests man for immigration violation

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. *Aug. 26, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: Police received a report of a theft in progress.  Police attended the scene and with the assistance of mall security arrested two suspects for theft under $5,000. One of the suspects was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a future date. The other suspect was arrested under the Immigration Act and picked up by Canadian Border Services to be deported, as they had overstayed their travel visa.

*Aug. 27, 1200 Block of Gillespie Road: Several items were found in a bag at the side of the golf course. Police attended and found some of the items had been stolen from a vehicle, which had been left unlocked and entered sometime overnight. Items, including golf clubs were returned to the owner. Police also recovered two abandoned bikes in the area, possibly associated with the theft.

*Aug. 27, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: Complainant reported their bike was stolen from the mall sometime in the afternoon. The bicycle, valued at $1,000, is described as a blue, GT Aggressor, sport bike. Police contacted mall security, but there was no surveillance video of the area where bike was stolen.

*Aug. 27, 500 Block of Boundary Bay Road: A report received from Metro Vancouver that sometime overnight, the gates to Boundary Bay Regional Park had been damaged. In the morning the gates were found wide open, with the locks pried open, causing approximately $50 in damage. No other damage to the park was found. 

*Aug. 27, 1900 Block of 56th Street: During a sobriety roadblock check, police stopped a vehicle, and noticed an empty beer can beside the back seat passenger. The driver provided two breath samples as requested with both reading “fail.” As a result, the driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was picked up at the scene by a friend.

Ladner

*Aug. 21, 7700 Block of Berg Road: A business reported that someone pried open the door of the business and stole a mixer drill valued at $400. No surveillance video or witnesses located.

*Aug. 21, 5600 Block of 47A Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight, their vehicle was broken into while parked on the street in front of their apartment. Items stolen include a backpack, black fanny pack, notebook, earbuds, and two sets of keys. As there was no damage to the vehicle, the complainant believes they may have left the vehicle unlocked. Canvass of the area for surveillance video proved negative.

*Aug. 23, 4900 Block of Elliot Street: During a traffic stop, police located a driver with a strong odour of liquor on their breath. Two breath samples provided by the suspect both read “fail.” The driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle impounded for 30 days.

*Aug. 23, 8000 Block of River Road: A business reported they were broken into sometime late in the evening, and a septic tank valued at $2,300 was stolen. Suspects climbed the fence and slide the septic tank to an area out of the sight of the surveillance video where it was removed through a hole cut in the fence. Incident is still under investigation.

*Aug. 23, 4600 Block of Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported the theft of a bike left locked in the bike rack at the Ladner bus loop. The bicycle, valued at $800, is described as a grey Giant Talon, 3 Mountain bike, with 29” wheels and a Village Bike sticker on the frame. No surveillance video in the area.

*Aug. 25, 5400 Block of Highway 17A:  During a sobriety roadblock check, police located a driver who admitted to consuming two beers. Two breath samples provided both read “warn.” As a result, the driver was given a three-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver took a taxi home, and the vehicle was towed to their residence.
