The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
*July 14, 8:44 p.m., 4900 block Canoe Pass Way: Complainant reported there were three sports cars at a nearby business that she believed were preparing to race. Police area patrols were negative for any racing or driving offenses. Police located a group of 15 to 20 classic and foreign car club members and enthusiasts in a parking lot near a fast food restaurant for their regular weekly evening car club gathering. In the past, police have attended and spoken with the group many times and all are aware of maintaining good relationships with the public in the area and are mindful of their driving behaviour and conduct.
*July 16, 6:46 p.m., 900 block Gale Road: Complainant reported that he was driving behind a suspected impaired driver. The complainant stated that the vehicle was not staying in his lane and had body damage. Police attended the driver’s residence and observed the vehicle parked in the driveway. Police spoke with the driver who advised that he was driving the vehicle and that the damage was from last season’s snow storm. Police determined that there were no signs of impairment.
*July 17, 3:11 p.m., 300 block 52nd Street: Complainant reported there was a 95-year-old male who was confused and could not find his vehicle in the parking lot of a local grocery store. Police attended and transported the male home to his residence, then searched for the vehicle which was located parked on the other side of the parking lot. Police transported the male back to his vehicle to drive it home.
Ladner
*July 12, 8:40 a.m., location withheld: Complainant requested police assist her in gaining entry to her apartment after she was accidentally locked out on her second storey balcony by her two-year-old child. The complainant advised that she was cleaning her deck when her daughter closed the sliding door, which caused the locking mechanism to shift into the lock position. The complainant was concerned as her daughter was climbing on furniture and placing household items into her mouth. The main door into the residence was locked at the time of the incident and the building manager was unable to attend to unlock the suite. Police were eventually able to gain entry into the suite via an unlocked window and both the complainant and her daughter were unharmed.
*July 13, 12:56 p.m., 4600 block Evergreen Lane: Complainant phoned police to report that a police officer had phoned her requesting her SIN number as her accounts had been compromised. Police phoned the complainant, who advised that the officer on the phone provided a badge number. The complainant stated that she did not provide any additional personal details and that her financial accounts were not affected. Police advised the complainant to make a report to the appropriate sources and report this incident to her bank. Police also informed the complainant that no legitimate police department or government agency would request personal details by phone. The complainant understood and stated she would contact police if she noted anymore fraudulent activity.
*July 14, 10:07 a.m., 7000 block Highway 17: Police were conducting on-foot laser enforcement when they noticed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Using radar, the vehicle was caught travelling at 131km/h in an 80km/h highway zone. The vehicle was subsequently stopped and the driver was advised of the reason for the stop. The driver was served an excessive speed violation ticket and had the vehicle was impounded.
*July 15, 11:45 p.m., 3600 block Arthur Drive: Police initiated a traffic stop for a vehicle driving over a bike lane. Police observed that the driver had glossy red eyes and combined with the driving behaviour, police formed the suspicion that that the driver had alcohol in his body. The driver was read an Approved Screening Device demand, and the driver provided two breath samples, both resulting in a “fail.” The driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition and had his vehicle impounded.
*July 16, 4:40 p.m., 4600 block 51st Street: Complainant reported observing three young females trying to climb the roof at nearby school. Police attended and located the three females near the main entrance to the school. All of them stated that they were just looking for a place to sit and hang out. Police warned them to not attempt to climb the roof for safety and potential criminal reasons. They all understood and stated they would not attempt to climb the roof.
