South Delta Crime Beat: Resident loses $10,000 in ‘grandparent scam’

Jan. 31, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A business reported that a male entered the store and selected a black Helly Hansen sport jacket valued at $130 and left without paying.  The suspect is described as 20 years old, 6’ 3” tall, blond hair, and wearing blue jeans and white shoes. Area patrols to try and find the suspect were negative. Photos were obtained from surveillance video for dissemination and possible identification of the suspect. 

Jan. 31, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported they received a phone call telling them their grandchild was in jail and needed bail funds. A person, impersonating a bondsman came to the complainant’s residence and was given several thousand in cash by the complainant. A further $7,000 was requested and provided in cash. The complainant found out the situation was fraudulent when they called their grandchild who indicated they were not in jail. Total loss of funds over $10,000. Police file under investigation.

Feb. 3, 5000 Block of Winskill Drive: Police observed a vehicle parked across several parking spots with a lone person in the driver’s seat, keys in the ignition, and the dash lit up. When police approached the vehicle, the driver immediately exited the vehicle and approached the police. As there was a distinct odour of alcohol coming from the driver, police requested breathe samples. Two samples were provided by the driver with both reading fail. As a result, the driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver left the area on foot.

Feb. 4, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A vendor in the mall left their kiosk unattended for a few minutes and when they returned, they found their pin pad had been stolen.  Surveillance video revealed a heavy set South Asian male stealing the pin pad and leaving the parking lot in a white Tesla SUV. The business owner indicated their account had not been compromised. Police to continue investigation on receipt of surveillance video from the mall.

Ladner

Feb. 1, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported they received a call from a person posing as the fraud department of their bank, believing the caller to be legitimate the complainant provided them with their banking details. The complainant realized they were the victim of fraud when $800 was withdrawn from their bank accounts. The bank has secured the accounts and issued new banking cards. 

Feb. 1, 7000 Block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police stopped a vehicle, which was travelling at 136 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone. The driver was given a $483 ticket for driving at an excessive speed, and an immediate seven-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver left in an Uber. 

Feb. 3, 5200 Block of Ladner Trunk Road: A business reported that a male entered the store and selected and concealed three bottles of tequila in a cross body bag, and two bottles in his pants, worth a total value of $540 and left the store without payment.  Surveillance video shows a Caucasian male, 30 years of age, wearing a cream jacket and a medical mask. Police investigation to continue upon receipt of surveillance video. 

Feb. 4, 5500 Block of 49th Avenue: A business reported, two teenage males had smashed windows and broken a fence. Police attended and found two vehicles belonging to the business with extensive damage to the windows. Patrol of the area located one male who stated his friend had left the area in an Uber. Police attended the home of that youth, who admitted to having too much to drink and being responsible for all the damage. Both males were arrested and charged. They were released with an undertaking to appear in court at a future date. 

Feb. 4, 7300 Block of 72nd Street: Police conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle driving at a speed of 100 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. The driver provided two breath samples with both reading fail. As a result, they were given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver was picked up by a friend.
