South Delta Crime Beat: ‘Secret shopper’ is out $1,350 due to fraudulent employer

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
 
Tsawwassen
 
• Jan. 12, 10:17 p.m., 5100-block of Winskill Drive: Witnesses informed the complainant they had just heard his vehicle start and immediately leave the driveway. The complainant then contacted police indicating his vehicle had been stolen and described it as a four-door short box white truck with a lift and white front bumper. There is a “rock and roll” sticker on the bumper and two baby seats in the rear passenger seat. An extensive patrol of the area by police proved negative. Information regarding the vehicle added to the police information database.
 
• Jan. 14, 8:20 a.m., 1800-block of 56th Street: A business reported the glass to the front door of the shop had been broken and the business entered. Items stolen include tools and a laptop valued at $400. Glass seized for forensic examination.
 
• Jan. 14, 3:29 p.m., 1600-block of Golf Club Drive: Complainant reported she and some of her neighbours had been experiencing petty thefts from their yards over the past year, some of which had not been reported. In the latest occurrence pillows from the front bench of her residence were stolen. Police encouraged residents to report all thefts.
 
• Jan. 14, 4 p.m., 900-block of Bayview Drive. Tenants reported thieves had entered their residence and stolen two Sony PS4s, seven PS4 games, an Apple iPod Touch, a KRK speaker set with sub-woofer and a Live Controller board. As there was no sign of forced entry, it is believed the suspects entered the residence through an unlocked rear patio door.
 
• Jan. 15, 1 p.m., 1000-block of Eden Crescent: Complainant reported the theft sometime overnight of her Maui Jim sunglasses from her unlocked vehicle parked in her driveway. 
 
• Jan. 16, 1:13 p.m., 5700-block of Ferguson Court: Complainant reported an attempted theft from her unlocked vehicle parked in her driveway. Police attended and investigation located a neighbour who had the theft of a pair of Oakley sunglasses from his unlocked vehicle the prior night. Video surveillance obtained from a resident in the cul-de-sac showed a male entered the area on a BMX-style bicycle. He was of slim build wearing dark clothing, baseball cap and a dark backpack.  
 
• Jan. 16, 7:40 p.m., Tudor Court: Report received from complainant that her vehicle was stolen from her driveway. Keys to the vehicle and a house key were in the console of the vehicle. Complainant also found the front door to the residence unlocked. Unknown if the vehicle or house had been left locked.
 
Ladner
 
• Jan. 12, 7 p.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police received a wallet found in the parking lot of the shopping centre. The wallet contains an Oklahoma driver’s license and student card, credit card and other miscellaneous loyalty cards. Owner can claim on identification at police headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent.
 
• Jan. 12, 11:25 a.m., Roberts Bank Road: Complainant reported the possible theft of scrap metal. Two male suspects were observed taking apart lamp standards left at the roadside. The males were advised this was not scrap and they immediately fled the area. Police provided with the license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle and are following up.
 
• Jan. 12, 1 p.m., 7600-block of Berg Road: Complainant reported that while he was changing his clothes at his worksite he had left his wallet and keys on a shelf. Later in the day another employee brought the complainant his keys but the wallet was missing. The wallet contained many personal cards, including bank and credit cards, and cash. Information regarding the contents of the wallet entered in the police information database.
 
• Jan. 13, 5:33 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Fraud reported by complainant who had accepted a job advertised on Craigslist. The position was listed from “Monark” as a “secret shopper” customer service evaluator. The complainant received a cheque for $1,950 from the suspect, which she deposited in her account. She then transferred $1,350 from her personal account to the suspect as required. The original cheque was voided as being from an unknown account and the complainant suffered a $1,350 loss. The bank has been provided with all the details and the investigation continues.
 
• Jan. 14, 11:58 a.m., Progress Way: A business reported the theft of parts taken from a Bobcat parked in its unlocked commercial compound. Theft occurred over the past two days and included four wheels and tires, and a front-end bucket.
 
• Jan. 14, 4:47 p.m., 7800-block of Hoskins Street: Complainant reported he had left his truck parked on the street over the weekend and when he returned he found the tailgate and all the bolts had been stolen. Complainant indicated that in the past while parked in the same area he has had his batteries and fuel stolen. Nothing for forensic examination as complainant had already had the vehicle repaired.
 
• Jan. 15, 2:23 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A business reported a suspect entered the store, selected a radio, concealed it and then left without paying. Suspect is described as a bald male wearing a brown jacket and light pants. Video surveillance still photos of the suspect disseminated for possible identification.
 
• Jan. 17, 2:30 p.m., 5000-block of Fenton Drive: Complainant filed an online report indicating her vehicle had been entered overnight and small change stolen. No damage to the vehicle.
