South Delta Crime Beat: Suspect flees after questions from bank

Attempt made to withdraw large sum using fraudulent copies of SIN and citizenship cards

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN

March 23, 10:05 a.m., 5100-block of Springs Boulevard: A business reported that when an employee arrived to work they observed pry marks on the front door. Police attended and confirmed the attempt to break and enter. In discussion with the owner of the business it was determined that entry to the premises was not gained. Damage to the door: approximately $200.

March 24, 7:32 p.m., 5500-block of 16th Avenue: Complainant reported they were concerned they were the victim of fraud following meeting a person on Facebook. The suspect claimed to work for an investment company and convinced the complainant to invest $450 via an e-transfer. Subsequently the complainant found an additional $900 had been e-transferred to the suspect. The complainant requested police to file a report for information purposes Attempt made to withdraw large sum using fraudulent copies of SIN and citizenship cards and they would ask for further assistance if the transactions proved not to be legitimate.

March 26, 3:15 p.m., 5400-block of Candlewyck Wynd: Complainant reported they left their bike parked outside their front door and when they returned a couple of hours later the bike water holder was smashed and both tires and the seat slashed.

LADNER

March 21, 10:16 a.m., 4900-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported they left their locked vehicle parked overnight outside their residence and when they returned to it in the morning the two side mirrors had been ripped from the vehicle. No witnesses.

March 21, 5:12 p.m., 6100-block of 49th Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight the decal from their license plate was stolen.

March 22, 2:08 p.m., 5 p.m., 7600-block of Macdonald Road: Complainant reported that sometime overnight the decal was stolen from the license plate of the company truck parked in the company parking lot.

March 24, 1:16 p.m., 5200-block of 57A Street: Complainant reported they received a call from a company claiming to be Microsoft indicating someone had gained access to the complainant's computer and that $500 was required in order to resolve the issue. The complainant provided the payment by credit card and then the company requested further monies be sent by cheque. Realizing they were the victim of fraud, complainant advised their credit card company of the situation.

March 25, 9 p.m., 5600-block of 46B Avenue: Complainant reported a large group of teenagers threw a milk jug full of purple Slurpee at the front door of their residence. Police investigated and found several neighbours who indicated this group of youths had been causing problems in the neighbourhood for several months. Police conducted patrols of the area but no youth located. Information was given to the Ladner CoPS requesting they provide assistance to the neighbourhood in setting up Block Watch.

March 26, 2:05 p.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported an attempt had been made to use fraudulent copies of their SIN and citizenship cards to withdraw a large sum of money from the bank. When the bank questioned the suspect regarding such a large withdrawal, they fled the bank leaving behind the fraudulent ID. Investigation of the fraud to continue with the bank.

March 26, 5:31 p.m., 4800-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported their basketball hoop was stolen from the end of their driveway. A neighbour indicated they observed an older male with a child in a black pickup truck take the hoop. The hoop was weighted down, making it obvious it was still in use and not left at the curb for collection at Spring Clean-Up.
