Students at Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen coloured old water bottles with markers and then cut them into spirals to create a hanging piece of art.

Southpointe Academy students recently created a bright, colourful new art project.

The hanging piece is made up of 250 recycled water bottles.

"It's a recycled art project," said PE and art teacher Tristan Simpson.

The piece was inspired by famous artist Dale Chihuly and a post on Pinterest by New York art teacher Daniel Lynch, Simpson noted.

Kindergarten to Grade 5 students coloured entire bottles with red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple markers. The bottles were cut into spirals and attached one by one.

Student council helped collect, wash, clean, dry and distribute bottles to classes.
