Support for Japan

Fundraiser show scheduled at Legion

The Jan Van and the Party Prism band will be playing a fundraiser show tomorrow night at the Tsawwassen Legion.

The show, We Can for Japan, will be raising money for earthquake relief efforts in Japan where a major earthquake and tsunami killed thousands earlier this year.

"It is our goal to raise awareness as well as funds to put towards the Red Cross initiatives that are taking place in Japan right now," says Janelle Vanderwerff, the band's singer, in an e-mail to the Optimist. "We are going to be showing a short clip of the Japan earthquake, as well as talk about ways that we can become more prepared if and when an earthquake hits B.C." the band is made up of six members with four of those being South Delta Secondary grads (Vanderwerff, her sister and guitarist Chelsea, bassist Jeremy Lake and drummer Dan Fraser).

Jan Van and the Party Prism is primarily a cover band and has been together for about a year.

"We play a range of songs from different music genres, from oldies to classic rock, to more modern indie rock or pop country songs," says Vanderwerff, 24, a recent University of Victoria grad with a degree in psychology.

The band is working on some original music as well.

We Can for Japan is set for tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Legion. Tickets are $10 minimum donation. There will be a silent auction with items ranging from a Sirius Satellite Radio to an Ogio golf bag. There will be also be a 50/50 draw at the fundraiser.
