Teen suspect back in court

Preliminary hearing underway into last year's fatal stabbing at Tsawwassen First Nation

A preliminary inquiry into last year's fatal Tsawwassen First Nation stabbing started in Surrey provincial court yesterday.

The suspect, who was 17 at the time and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, stands charged with second degree murder and attempted murder after an alleged attack that left one teen dead and another critically injured.

Police were called to the 1700-block of Tsawwassen Drive at around 10 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2013.

Upon arrival, officers discovered two teenage girls suffering from stab wounds. Both were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. The 16-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries.

The boy was taken into custody later the next morning.

The accused and the victims were known to each other.

A preliminary inquiry, which is subject to a publication ban, is held to determine whether there is enough evidence to go to trial.
