TFN stabbing suspect to remain in custody pending assessment

17-year-old's next court appearance is scheduled for April 4

The teen accused in last month's fatal stabbing on Tsawwassen First Nation lands will remain in custody pending a second court-ordered assessment.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified due to his age, appeared in Surrey Provincial Court Wednesday morning.

The judge ordered an assessment for the purposes of a possible bail hearing. The teen already underwent a fitness assessment to determine whether he is fit to continue in the judicial process. The results of that report were not discussed in court; however, the accused did make a brief appearance in the courtroom.

The teen stands charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder after two girls were allegedly attacked on Feb. 15.

Police were called to the 1700-block of Tsawwassen Drive at around 10 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found two teenage girls lying on the ground suffering from stab wounds.

Both were treated at the scene and airlifted to hospital.

One girl, 16, succumbed to her injuries while the second victim, 15, was seriously injured. She has since been released from hospital and continues to recover from her injuries, Delta police spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan said this week.

Early on Feb. 16, police said investigators were looking for a known suspect who was also known to the victims and at around 11 a.m. the accused was arrested without incident.

The names of the two victims have not been released in order to protect the accused's identity.

The teen's next court date is scheduled for April 4.
