Mary Poppins

Experience a New West tradition when Royal City Musical Theatre’s spring production returns to the Massey Theatre stage. This year’s musical is Mary Poppins, featuring the world’s favourite nanny. It’s adapted from the beloved stories by PL Travers and the original film.

Play On

Enjoy an evening or afternoon of live entertainment at the Vagabond Players’ final show of their 2023/2024 season, Play On! The play is described as “a hilarious love letter to community theatre.”

Mermaid

Check out a modern twist on The Little Mermaid, when students in St. Thomas More Collegiate’s drama department present Mermaid. This play is not the Disney version and explores 21st-century themes of voice loss and teen issues.

Antiques and collectibles show

Shop from more than 200 tables of antiques and collectibles when the 29th annual Fraser Valley Antiques and Collectibles Club returns to New West. It’s described as being the “biggest and best” antiques and collectibles show in B.C.

  • When: Friday, April 26 (5 to 9 p.m.) and Saturday April 27 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Where: Queen’s Park Arena, corner of First Street and Third Avenue
  • Details: Admission is $5 on Saturday (regular show hours). Early admission (pre-show early entry) is $20 for Friday night. Note: Early admission tickets includes admission for both days. Tickets are available at the door.

Paint Pots in the Park

Relax and paint a plant pot at the Paint Pots in the Park, part of the Brush Hour Paint Nights series of events. Your ticket includes one clay pot, the use of an apron, paint and paint supplies, and step-by-step guidance by a professional artist. Paint is involved, so folks are reminded to wear items they aren’t afraid to spill on.

  • Where: Queen’s Park
  • Details: Register online. This event tends to sell out quickly.

Invasive Pull

Help remove invasive Himalayan blackberry plants and restore the biodiversity to Glenbrook Ravine Park at the all-ages and abilities Invasive Pull. The Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver, the City of New Westminster, and New Westminster Environmental Partners are hosting this stewardship event, which runs rain or shine.  

  • When: Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Where: Glenbrook Ravine (enter via Jamieson Court)
  • Details: Sign up online. Volunteers will need to sign waivers and should bring appropriate footwear, a water bottle filled with water, work gloves (f you have them), tools (if you have them, otherwise tools will be provided). Folks also need to dress for the weather (sunscreen, hat, long-sleeve shirt).

Artist talk

Celebrate Earth Month by tuning in to a virtual artist talk – Extinction + Soundscapes, hosted by the New Media Gallery. The talk will touch on the themes of extinction found in the gallery’s current Zooveillance exhibition. The event’s panellists are: Ruth Simons (executive director and lead for Atl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region) and Mark Nazemi (who works at the intersection of sound, technology, education and well-being.)

Sunday, April 28

Plant a Row-Grow a Row 2024 kickoff

Get ready for garden season at the Plant a Row – Grow a Row program’s 2024 kickoff event – a drive-thru event where volunteers will be giving out great garden give-aways including seeds and potting soil, pots and planters, veggie seedlings, and much more. The program encourages folks to donate homegrown or store-bought fruits and vegetables to the program at its weekly collections; donations are then distributed to local charities.

  • When: Sunday, April 28, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Where: St. Thomas More Collegiate parking lot, 7450 12th Ave., Burnaby (just across the 10th Avenue border)
  • Monetary donations and donations of non-perishable food items will be gratefully accepted and given to Ryan’s Rainbow and Union Gospel Mission, who support people in need in New West and Burnaby.
