That was a big glove for a sock-it-to-him boxer to throw around.

Let’s head back to January 1969 when they were training young fighters at the Ladner Boxing Club.

Practicing at a Delta Secondary gymnasium every Monday night, the club was getting ready for the Emerald Gloves Competition, featuring boys fighting in several weight classes.

Pictured above were a couple of newcomers training in the sport, Steve Hillairet, 7, and Stewart Rawlings, 9.

Assistant boxing coach Dave Johnson looks on as Hillairet throws one at Rawlings, who grits his teeth.

Len Barker was the coach of the club at the time.
