Let’s head back to April 5, 1980 when the Tsawwassen Rugby Club did its best in playoff battles against more experienced Vancouver foes in that year’s Vancouver Rugby League playoffs.

Despite a pair of hard-fought efforts, both teams went down to defeat in the quarterfinals, the first team narrowly losing 15-12 to the Meralomas while the second team lost 7-0 to the more experienced UBC Old Boys.

After thrashing the Ex-Brits the week prior, Tsawwassen’s first team went into their game against the Meralomas feeling pretty confident they could win.

However, the Meralomas were a highly-experienced team, having at least three players who played on the Canadian National Team.

As well, the Meralomas, who finished first in the Vancouver League that year, had home field advantage. The field itself, wet and muddy, was non-conducive to Tsawwassen’s style of play, either.

Players on the first Tsawwassen team included Rob Lauburnn and Tony Greville and the second had the likes of Greg Hibert.

Following the conclusion of their season, the Tsawwassen Rugby Club played an exhibition game against Nippon Steel from Japan.
