Townhouse plan draws concerns

Concerns have been raised about the look of a proposed townhouse development in Ladner.

The three-unit project is slated for the lot behind the former Ladner Baptist Church building on 47A Avenue and Delta Street.

Earlier this year, restoration work began on the former church. The small house beside the church, which was used as a parsonage, was demolished last summer and the heritage building was moved six feet closer to 47A Avenue.

In addition to restoring the old church, the owner has applied to build three townhomes at the rear of the lot as well as single family or duplex dwelling.

While the restoration work on the former church was approved by Delta council earlier this year and has been going on for several months, the application for the four new structures received preliminary approval late last month and was scheduled to go to public hearing on Monday.

The hearing had to be rescheduled after council ran out of time. It will now take place at 5 p.m. on Dec. 17.

Several residents have voiced concerns about the design of the townhouses and a 101-signature petition opposing the form, character and height of the homes was submitted to council.
