Trucks fail at 43% clip in annual inspection blitz

Last week's three-day commercial vehicle inspection blitz saw more than 40 per cent of those trucks inspected given an out of service rating.

Last week's three-day commercial vehicle inspection blitz saw more than 40 per cent of those trucks inspected given an out of service rating.

The Delta Police Department's traffic section was joined by several other agencies June 18 to 20 for the seventh annual blitz.

Teams were placed at several locations throughout the community, with thousands of trucks passing through the inspection points.

At each site trucks were put through a preliminary visual inspection and any that looked like they could have problems were put through a second, more thorough inspection.

"The inspectors use their expertise to focus on vehicles that were not likely to pass an inspection," said department spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan.

The inspectors look at the truck's mechanical components, including brakes, tires and load security.

This year, 429 trucks received a secondary inspection. Of those, 184 (43 per cent) were given an out of service rating, 208 had some kind of violation and 37 passed.

Inspectors also issued 374 tickets for various violations, impounded three vehicles, issued one indefinite licence suspension and found one prohibited driver.

The out of service rate is up slightly over last year's 39 per cent.
