Residents in the River Road West area in Ladner were thrust into the dark Wednesday night after a serious motor vehicle accident.

BC Hydro spokesperson Moira Scott said the power outage was reported just before 11 p.m. At its height more than 2,300 customers were affected, but within a few hours, Hydro crews had restored power to most of the area. As of Thursday morning, 520 customers were still without power.

“We were delayed in getting to the scene as police were involved in an active investigation,” said Scott Thursday morning. “Once our crews got to the scene we could begin to access the situation.”

Scott said the accident knocked down a power pole, damaged a second and knocked down several power lines.

“We did manage to switch a few things around and get power restored to most of the area around 2 a.m.,” she said, adding they hoped to have power fully restored by 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. “It takes anywhere between four and eight hours for our crews to replace a power pole, so as you can imagine this is a significant fix for us. We are doing everything we can to restore power to the area as quickly as possible.”

According to Delta police the accident was a two-car collision that sent five people to hospital, four with non-life threatening injuries and one with serious injuries.

Due to the serious nature of the accident, DPD had the road closed for approximately eight hours. Investigators cleared the accident scene and opened the area up to traffic around 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning. There is no word yet on what caused the collision.
