The building envelope remediation work has several components including new metal cladding, insulation and a vapour barrier on the exterior wall.

The city has issued a request for proposals for construction upgrades at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

The project involves structural and building envelope remediation of the west exterior hockey arena wall of the facility.

The structural remediation consists of, among other things, a concrete masonry unit reinforcement.

A city engineering department report three years ago noted studies had identified that a portion of the concrete masonry unit walls are structurally deficient and may fail in a seismic event.

The issues with the walls at the recreation centre were investigated after similar issues were earlier discovered at North Delta Recreation Centre.

In 2016, council agreed to spend close to $900,000 to remediate walls at the ice arena of the North Delta facility after a serious and potentially dangerous fault was uncovered.

Both facilities were constructed in the early 1970s and have similar walls.

It's also not the first time structural problems have occurred at a Delta recreational facility.

In 2014, the stucco façade on the east side of the Ladner Leisure Centre arena fell away from the wall after the anchoring system failed. Nobody was hurt and the pool and fitness centre re-opened soon after, but there was limited use of the arena for an extensive time.

Delta ended up spending around $3.8 million on the Ladner Leisure Centre as it took the opportunity to undertake a number of other upgrades.
