Waterfront areas escape as flood threat passes

After several warnings over the weekend, South Delta escaped flooding Monday morning.

After several warnings over the weekend, South Delta escaped flooding Monday morning.

With some stormy weather in the forecast, the Corporation of Delta issued an alert on Saturday as strong winds and a storm surge coupled with a high tide prompted concerns of flooding in several Tsawwassen neighbourhoods and on Westham Island.

Delta's emergency operations centre was set up and engineering crews were out conducting inspections of dikes and the waterfront areas at risk. Beach walk-ways were lock-blocked and sandbagged as a precaution.

However, due to a change in wind direction and a reduced storm surge, most of the area escaped flooding.

A few areas along Ladner Harbour experienced minor flooding, but municipal staff quickly addressed that situation.
