Weekend storm wreaks havoc

High winds leave hundreds of thousands without power

Thousands around the Lower Mainland, including South Delta, are still without power this morning after a storm blew through the region over the weekend.

BC Hydro crews brought in crews from around the province to help restore electricity to the more than 500,000 homes that lost power in the region over the weekend.
While some residents have been without power since Saturday, crews are also dealing with new outages as another, milder, storm hit the area Monday morning. Significant rainfall and winds gusting up to 40 to 50 km/hr are expected throughout Monday.

While Optimist calls to BC Hydro have not yet been returned, according to its website close to 1,000 customers in Ladner and Tsawwassen and more than 1,000 in North Delta are in the dark this morning, with power expected to be restored until later tonight.

In total, BC Hydro was reporting Monday morning that more than 50,000 homes were still without power.

Problems with BC Hydro’s website over the weekend also frustrated many customers looking for information and updates.

On Saturday, wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour downed trees and power lines throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.

It was BC Hydro’s biggest disruption since 2006, which saw windstorms down thousands of tress in Stanely Park and left about 600,000 households without power. More than 400 Hydro workers, including 250 power line technicians were on the job on Sunday.
