The South Delta Invaders '95 girls fastpitch team made an improbable run from an 11th place finish in round-robin play to reach the final at the Bantam "B" Lower Mainland Cup, played last weekend at Brandrith Park in Tsawwassen.
Despite stellar defense and pitching early in the weekend, the Invaders struggled to find their bats in the opening three games. They started rolling Saturday afternoon in the playoffs by defeating the sixth seed '96 Invaders 8-2.
Sunday morning produced a resounding 11-1 victory over the third seed and previously undefeated Coquitlam Classics -- avenging a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in earlier round robin play.
Next up was the second seed and also unbeaten Langley Extreme.
The game was a tight see-saw affair that concluded with the Invaders scoring three runs with two out in the last inning to pull out a come-from-behind 8-6 victory.
The Invaders' memorable run ended in the final when they battled the powerhouse Surrey Storm '95 in a tremendous game that featured excellent pitching, backed by brilliant defence.
Each team had chances to score but South Delta could not push a run across the plate in a hard fought 3-0 loss.
Next up for the girls is the Provincial Bantam "B" Championships -- July 22-24 in North Delta.
Team members include Erin Cochrane, Megan Fenn, Sierra Young, Megan Dunlop, Kaitlyn Watt, Christine Dixon, Brynna Symons, Crystal McKenzie, Sarah Strukoff, Sarah Bakke, ML Schnieder, Sarah Baron, Taryn Keogh and Pricilla Westlake.
