Spencer Traher and Bryon Maxwell will be trying to get pucks past their former minor hockey teammate as the Delta Ice Hawks and North Delta Devils square off in a Pacific International Junior Hockey League best-ofseven quarter-final series.
After a slow start to the season, the Devils came on strong over the second half and it was none other than South Delta Minor Hockey alumni Harry Fredeman who led the way.
The 20-year-old goaltender finished with a sparkling 20-11 record that featured a 2.82 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.
He was at his best in a pair of memorable performances against the league-leading Richmond Sockeyes, including an amazing 56-save 1-0 shutout win on Jan. 12.
He finished the season with three wins over Richmond and also won his last two starts against the Ice Hawks.
Fredeman was among a stable of strong goaltenders who came through the South Delta Minor system who went on to play at the junior level. The Devils are his third stop in the PIJHL, having spent the bulk of his career with the Mission Icebreakers.
The series opened last night in Ladner and continues tonight with game two at 9: 15 p.m. The teams then move to Sungod Arena on Friday and Saturday for games three and four at 7: 30 p.m. and 6: 45 p.m., respectively.
The Ice Hawks (291131) finished six points better than the Devils (26-14-4) in the regular season and won four of the six meetings.
Delta closed out its schedule with a 7-1 road win over the Abbotsford Pilots last Friday.
Traher led the way with a hat trick and one assist but it still wasn't enough to win the league scoring race. Aldergrove's Thomas Hardy managed three points in his final game to pull even with Traher at 73 points and finished on top with more goals (33-28).
