B.C. Lacrosse honours Junior Islanders coach

Shawn Springett recognized at AGM in Whistler with top award after guiding Delta to breakthrough season

The awards continue to pour in for Shaun Springett after guiding the Delta Islanders to their breakthrough season in the B.C. Junior "A" Lacrosse League.

Springett has received the John Cavallin Merit Award as B.C. Lacrosse Association's Senior Coach of the Year. The presentation was made last weekend at BCLA's annual general meeting in Whistler.

The recognition comes on the heels of Springett earlier being named BCJALL coach of the year after the Islanders reached the league championship series for the first time in franchise history. Delta also finished second with a best-ever regular season record of 14-5-2. Last month, the club announced he has signed a extension to remain behind the bench for at least two more seasons.

"Shaun has established himself as one of the premier coaches in our league," said Islanders general manager Jamie Scott. "He demonstrated a commitment to winning and led us to our best season in 10 years with 13 rookies in the line-up and an intermediate age goalie.

"Shaun stayed focused on the club's plan and never changed it. We are confident with his dedication and hard work, the club will continue to yield positive results. He has built a strong foundation of winning for this franchise and we feel we can continue to build on that foundation to achieve our ultimate goal of (winning) the Minto Cup."

The Islanders will lose a trio of graduating standouts in Mike Mallory, Logan Schuss and team captain Logan Schuss.

However, a strong core will be returning and the club is also expected to land some top intermediate graduates.

Boxla bits. Springett was not the only local award recipient in Whistler. Kody Moleschi was named winner of the Jimmy Gunn Merit Award as field referee of the year.

Meanwhile Delta Lacrosse's Trevor Smith and Delta Footmen's Les "Wally" Wolanski were among the 2012 B.C. Lacrosse Association President Award winners for their outstanding contributions to the sport's development in their community.
