The B.C. Hockey League has recognized one of the greatest talents to ever come out of South Delta as a member of its 60th Anniversary Team.

The league sourced the opinions of three BCHL experts to determine the all-time greatest and most impactful players that have come through the junior “A” circuit.

These players were judged solely on their BCHL careers and not what they went on to do afterwards.

Topping the list was Ladner native Shane Kuss as a slam-dunk top choice at forward and one of the few names to appear on all three submissions.

During a prolific career with the Surrey Eagles, Kuss become the league’s all-time leading scorer with 418 points and 282 assists over four seasons. He capped his career by helping the Eagles win the Fred Page Cup in 1997. That season he played on a line with future NHL Calder Trophy winner Scott Gomez.

Kuss, 45, was a key member of an outstanding group that came through the South Delta Minor Hockey Association, highlighted by winning the Bantam AAA provincial championship. It’s the only team to triumph at the elite U15 level in association history.

His coaching career has included guiding the Delta Ice Hawks to their one and only Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial junior “B” championship in 2006.

Today, he has teamed up with another SDMHA alumni, Matt Erhart, as the Player Development Leads for the Semiahmoo Minor Hockey Association.
