A second promising young player from Beach Grove Golf Club’s junior program has reached the winner’s circle in the early stages of the Vancouver Golf Tour’s 2021 season.

Russell Howlett fired a sizzling 7-under 65 to capture the Amateur Division at the VGT’s Hughes Trucking Open on Monday at the Pitt Meadows Golf Club.

The 2020 South Delta Secondary graduate shot a 32 on the back 9, including birdies on the par 4 17th and par-5 18th holes to finish one stroke ahead of Morgan Creek’s Dustin Franko in the 39-player field.

The winning score would have left Howlett tied for second in the Pro Division that was won by Cheam Mountain’s Kevin Stinson with a 65.

Howlett’s triumph came just over a week after Charlie Derrheim won the Mayfair Lakes Open in Richmond.

The VGT will feature tournaments through to mid-October including a stop at Kings Links by the Sea in Ladner on Aug. 3.
