Delta players set to take the field for the Whitecaps in League1 BC championship finals

Big weekend for soccer at BC Place

It’s a big weekend for the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place, and a pair of Delta players will be taking the field as part of it.

On Friday night, the Whitecaps MLS team plays in the knockout round of the Leagues Cup against Mexican powerhouse Tigres UANL.

Then on Saturday, the ‘Caps will play in both the men’s and women’s championship finals for the semi-professional League1 BC.

The women’s final will take place at 1 p.m. against Unity FC, with Ladner’s Sidney Venier. The Whitecaps are looking to repeat after winning the inaugural title last year.

“We have all worked so hard this season and have really bonded as a team, and to get to play at BC Place makes it all the more special,” said Venier. “We are really excited to share this game with young girls from all over the Lower Mainland, they can come to see the best local women’s soccer featuring girls from their very own hometowns. I think the stadium will have an exciting buzz, and we'll use that atmosphere to drive us to another victory.”

“Sidney is doing well. As one of the youngest players in the program this year, she has made her mark through relentless work ethic and determination to get better each day,” added head coach Katie Collar. “She is a goalkeeper who won over the locker room early with her winning mindset and ability to make the big save in training. We're looking forward to continue working with her to help her reach her potential.”

At 4 p.m., the men’s final will feature the Whitecaps against the regular season champion Victoria Highlanders FC.

Delta’s Patrick Izett, who came through the Whitecaps BMO Academy, has returned as one of the elder statesman to lead the group.

“As kids we dream of getting the opportunity to play at BC Place and to be able to do so with such a great group of lads makes for a special occasion,” noted Izett. “On a personal note, I am extremely grateful to [head coach] Rich Fagan, who has given me the opportunity to come back to the Whitecaps organization this summer and I’m very proud of our efforts this season. Saturday can’t come soon enough”

“The Highlanders are a top team, they are the league winners,” added Fagan. “It is a tall task for our young group but everyone is excited and we can’t wait to give everything for the club on our home pitch.”

Tickets are available at the door at BC Place, or online through Ticketmaster.
