Two Tsawwassen girls rep soccer teams are set to resume their outstanding seasons in the Okanagan heat.
The U18 and U17 Blues head to Penticton July 7 to 10 for the Provincial “B” Cup Championships. The tournament brings together eight teams from across the province to determine B.C. bragging rights.
The U18 Blues are no stranger to provincials — making their fifth straight appearance at the championships dating back to U14. They won bronze three years ago and came ever so close to reaching the top of the podium last season, falling to Surrey’s Central City Breakers in the final.
This time, Tsawwassen is considered the team to beat after repeating as Coastal Cup champions with a dominating 3-0 victory over the Richmond Ravens back in May. They also were earlier crowned B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League Cup champs for the top flight.
The Blues are in a round-robin group with host Pinnacles FC, Surrey FC Tigers and Richmond. The other pool includes Nelson, Kelowna, Saanich Fusion and Terrace.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Cup is a whole new experience for the U17 Blues following the team’s breakthrough season.
Tsawwassen captured the Coastal Cup for the first time with a dramatic 3-2 win in penalty kicks. The girls already knew they were headed to the Okanagan before kickoff with the two cup finalists assured berths.
The Blues will get a steady diet of Coastal competition in round-robin play with games against Sur-Del Selects and a rematch with Vancouver. The group also includes Prince George. The other side of the draw features Columbia Valley, Burnaby, Penticton and Williams Lake.
