A good volleyball season for the Delta Secondary junior girls was one win from being a great one.

DSS lost to Tweedsmuir on Monday night (Nov. 20) in four sets to finish in sixth place at the South Fraser Championships, missing out on the final berth for provincials.

Earlier in the night, DSS easily beat McMath in the first round in the consolation bracket.

DSS was in the consolation side of the draw after losing a hard-fought quarter-final match to Semiahmoo.

Coached by Grant Hornby and Erica Hurley, the team, captained by Athena Falcos, had a successful season.

They placed third in the Riverside tournament in Coquitlam, fourth in the Walnut Grove tournament in Langley and placed in the top eight of a 32-team tournament at WJ Mouat in Abbotsford.

“We started off the season with a few injuries, but we overcame that as a team,” said Hurley. “All season long we had a solid group of players, which includes four strong Grade 9 players.”

This year’s team included: Sage Heiner, Allysia Arriola, Bianca Mak, Maiya Wellington, Siara Samsudeen, Scarlett Erhart, Mila Kanda, Reese Bruckshaw, Janaya Oldham, Aliya Lockhart, Adriana Hurley, Athena Falcos and Chantel Peters.
