Gawdin makes WHL debut after big weekend in Prince George

A great couple of days has extended into a week for Glenn Gawdin.

A great couple of days has extended into a week for Glenn Gawdin.

The 15-year-old had a leading role in the Greater Vancouver Canadians impressive two games road sweep of the Cariboo Cougars and then made his Western Hockey League debut on Wednesday night for the Swift Current Broncos in Kelowna.

Gawdin was the Broncos' first round pick (fifth overall) in last spring's Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. He is eligible to be called up for five games during his B.C. Major Midget Hockey League season and Swift Current happens to making a west coast road swing.

He will will also be in the line-up for tonight's game against the Vancouver Giants at the Pacific Coliseum (7: 30 p.m.) and Saturday's contest in Victoria against the Royals. He could remain with the Broncos for Tuesday's game in Prince George as well.

After a slow start to the season, Gawdin has been on a tear playing on an all-Seafair alumni line with Austin Adamson and Alec Dawydiak.

The trio combined for 11 points in the Canadians' 9-6 win over the Cougars last Sunday with Gawdin leading the way with a pair of goals and three assists.

"I tried to get Glenn going by stacking up one of our lines and playing him on the wing with (WHL sixth overall Bantam pick) Adam (Musil)," said Canadians coach Leland Mack. "But it didn't really work out and he is a natural centre anyways. Since he has been with Austin and Alec, those three have really been clicking.

After a rough patch that saw the Canadians drop four of five games, they have now won four straight and eight of their last 10 to move up to fifth place in the 11-team league. The Cougars had not lost at home this season (8-0) and goaltender Nathan Warren was riding a four-game shutout streak before running into Greater Vancouver.

"It's rare to win games in Prince George, never mind sweep," said Mack, noting the Canadians have only done it one other time in franchise history. "We used their record at home and the goalie shutout streak as added motivation and the boys responded."
