Special Olympics Delta is thrilled to announce a long awaited program has been added to its variety of sports thanks to the support of the Sunshine Woods Golf Centre.

SOBC Delta head coach Ruth Towers worked over the winter with Sunshine Woods general manager Rob Cardero to put a 12week program together that commenced last month.

"Both Rob and Ruth have been instrumental in working together to get this program up and running and provide our athletes with this fantastic opportunity," said SOBC Delta executive member Tracey McConnell.

The partnership between Special Olympics Delta and Sunshine Woods coincides with the B.C. Golf Association and Special Olympics B.C. striking a deal last week to work with one another.

The exploratory relationship has been gradually growing in an effort to broaden the reach of golf in the province. Golf is a new and fast-growing addition to the slate of year-round sport programs offered by Special Olympics BC (SOBC).

In Langley next year, golf will be an event at the Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games for the second time.

B.C. is also the host province for the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, in which golf will be making its debut at the national level. When asked about the relationship, Debbie Pyne, Managing Director of Player Development with British Columbia Golf, could not have been more excited.

"I am truly pleased to be given the chance to work with Special Olympics B.C.," stated Pyne. "It is extremely important for British Columbia Golf to fulfill its mandate of bringing golf to everyone, including Special Olympics athletes."

SOBC Delta is a community-based organization whose volunteers work together to support the goal of providing local athletes with a variety of opportunities. They are always in need of coaches and volunteers from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, interests, and levels of ability to support these programs.

Donating equipment for golf and other sports is also greatly appreciated. Other spring programs currently underway include track and field, softball and soccer.
