Islanders get to stockpile talent as junior "A" midget draft goes Sunday

Delta Islanders begin their first official order of business in 2013 Sunday when the B.C. Junior "A" Lacrosse League holds its midget draft in Port Coquitlam.

Delta Islanders begin their first official order of business in 2013 Sunday when the B.C. Junior "A" Lacrosse League holds its midget draft in Port Coquitlam.

The six round draft returns after a two-year hiatus and is for graduating midget age players who have played for associations that are not affiliated with junior "A" organizations. The idea was it would help provide parity to a league that had been dominated by two or three teams, making them appealing destinations for top intermediate grads.

The draft helped build the Islanders into a championship contender with such past notable selections as Mike Mallory (Maple Ridge), Eli McLaughlin (Surrey) and Mike Henry (Kamloops). Players outside of Metro Vancouver are not eligible for selection this year.

The Islanders will also soon open their training camp at Sportstown in Richmond.
