The Delta Islanders are once again hosting a memorial game and a day of festivities in memory of Thomas Haydon.

Haydon was a Ladner resident and Delta firefighter who lost a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2018 at the age of 36, leaving behind his young family. He was also a big part of the lacrosse community as a player and a coach.

In his honour, the Thomas Haydon Memorial Game and Award was launched in 2019. The fundraiser sees his former teammates and friends get together for a fun alumni game and social before presenting the award and bursary to a member of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders. Haydon was the first-ever captain of the Islanders.

This year’s game day is Saturday, June 8.

There will be a alumni game at the Ladner Leisure Centre from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door.

The Junior A game between the Islanders and Port Coquitlam Saints will follow at 7 p.m. with the presentation of the Thomas Haydon Memorial Award during the second intermission.

A beer garden will run from 2 to 10 p.m., a food truck by Mr. G’s and a silent auction with signed jerseys from National Lacrosse League teams will also take place.

Funds raised from 2023 game helped to purchase bleachers for the Ladner lacrosse box this past spring, in collaboration with City of Delta.

Funds raised from this years 2024 game will go to Ladner’s Sarah Rodgers to support her and her family with her brain cancer treatment.
