Karate club turns in strong showing at Canadian tourney

Some up-and-coming members of the South Delta Kyokushin Karate Club turned in some strong performances at the 29th Canadian Tournament, held May 5 at BCIT.

Some up-and-coming members of the South Delta Kyokushin Karate Club turned in some strong performances at the 29th Canadian Tournament, held May 5 at BCIT.

The event, which attracted clubs from across the province, featured Kata, Continuous Non-Contact and Knockdown competitions for athletes ranging from the age of 12 and under.

South Delta came through with a pair of podium finishes in the Continuous Non-Contact 12 and Under Division as Stephanie Nicholls (71-85 lbs) won gold in her weight class and Aden Medcraft (86 lbs and over) came through with a bronze. Also representing the club were Katrina Strutt (70 lbs and under), Jackson Martin (71-85 lbs) and Matthew Bains McLauchlan (71-85 lbs).

In Kata, Nicholls added a second medal, earning bronze in the white/orange belt division. Eleven-year-old Keanna Foster also managed to place third in 12 and under blue belt.

South Delta also entered three groups into the Team Kata event. They included Maya Sato-Klemm, Jonah Sato-Klemm, Tahnee Sato-Klemm, Cassie Strutt, Kiana Sato-Klemm, Stephanie Nicholls, Dita Strutt, Cassie Strutt and Katrina Strutt.
