Ladner Pioneers three-peat as league champions

Men’s lacrosse team now off to defend national title

The Ladner Pioneers captured its third straight Senior B lacrosse title in dominating fashion Sunday in Ladner.

The Pioneers were crowed 2023 league and provincial champions after a 21-5 win over the Victoria Shamrocks to win their best-of-three series 2-0.

On Saturday, Ladner blasted the Shamrocks 20-3 in Victoria.

Ladner will now head to the Senior B National Lacrosse Championship in Oakville, Ont. Starting Aug. 27 where they will attempt to defend their national title.

Sunday’s game was close after the first period with Ladner leading 4-3, but the second period saw the Pioneers erupt for 14 goals with another eight in period three to leave no doubt who the better team was.

James Rahe led the way for the home-side with a 10-point game (4 goals, six assists), Tyler Pace had nine assists while Dean Fairlall also scored four goals.

Matt Hills was solid in net, stopping 30 of 35 shots.

In Saturday’s game in Victoria, Ladner jumped out to an 11-1 lead after the first period and poured it on to lead 18-2 after two.

Pace had three goals and six assists, while Rahe had an eight-point game with three goals and five assists. Alex Turner scored four goals.

Christian Del Bianca stopped 21 of 24 shots in net.

The West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association has announced its 2023 award winners

First team all stars from Ladner include: Del Bianco, Pace, Jeff Cornwall and Matt Beers. Second team all stars from Ladner include: Rahe and Jake Carey.
