Menzies throws 3 TDs in Sun Devils victory

Kyle Menzies picked up right where he left off last spring and that was bad news for the visiting Nanaimo Islanders.

The Grade 12 quarterback threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns to lead the South Delta Sun Devils to a 41-20 win on Saturday in Tsawwassen to open up the 2012 B.C. High School Football season.

Menzies, who logged plenty of playing time during his Grade 11 year, showed what the valuable experience can do with a stellar spring camp that included impressive performances in controlled scrimmages against John Barsby and Ballenas.

On Saturday, he picked apart the Islander secondary as the Sun Devils raced out to a 33-6 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way. His favourite target was David Mann who caught four passes for 160 yards and a pair of majors.

South Delta started the game in electrifying fashion as Mitch Dino took the opening kickoff 80-yards to paydirt. The defence also provided a big play as Mark Dykstra returned an interception for a touchdown.

The fourth ranked Sun Devils continue their non-conference schedule on Friday afternoon in what should be a tougher test at the Apple Bowl against Kelowna. The Owls were also victorious in week one, defeating Windsor 21-6.

South Delta will open conference play at home September 22 against Belmont.

Other pre-season action saw Delta's only other high school football team - the Seaquam Seahawks - drop a wild 35-29 decision to the West V ancouver Highlanders.

The Sunshine Hills school took a 29-28 lead with 70 seconds remaining, however, the Highlanders pulled out the win on a touchdown with just six seconds left.
