The North Delta Blue Jays are paying tribute to a former standout pitcher who lost his battle with brain cancer last May at 22 years of age.
Jonathan Coté led the B.C. Premier Baseball League in strikeouts in 2014 before taking his career south of the border for stops at Colorado Mesa University and Otero Junior College.
He was a player who demonstrated a strong work ethic, was an outstanding teammate with strong academic abilities and community involvement. He was very much a committed player and these fine attributes earned the respect, admiration and friendship of his coaches, teammates and fans.
The Blue Jays are dedicating the upcoming season to his memory by retiring his #56 jersey and banner in his honour will be on display in left field at Mackie Park.
A $1,000 Jonathan Coté Memorial scholarship will also be awarded annually to a graduating Blue Jay player who is moving on to a Canadian or US University or College and meets the same high criteria that Jonathan exemplified.
