The first week back from Spring Break was very busy for rugby at South Delta Secondary.
All four teams had home games on either April 3 or 4 and great fans added to the support and was much appreciated by the players.
The Tier 1 Juniors had a very close game against Lord Tweedsmuir.
After falling behind early, the team was able to settle their nerves and storm back in the second half with three tries and adding a conversion kick for a 17-15 win.
The Tier 2 juniors also played Lord Tweedsmuir who had some very large boys on the field. Even though Lord Tweedsmuir opened the scoring and was a much bigger team, SDSS was scrappy and used their speed to overcome the disadvantage, scoring three tries and adding two conversion kicks for a 19-7 win.
The senior girls team played their first game of the season, and first game as a team.
Two-thirds of the team being brand new to the sport, this was a huge learning experience. Semiahmoo was a more experienced team who struck early, taking a significant lead.
SDSS came back later in the game to close the gap after the nerves had settled. Ultimately falling score wise, the girls still won by having fun and learning from the experience.
On Tuesday, April 9, the Tier 2 Juniors went to McMath in Richmond.
Many of the players are still very new to the game, being their first season, while McMath only has one junior team who play at the Tier 2 level. Their team had some players with significant rugby experience and were very talented. McMath opened the scoring, jumping out to an early 12-0 lead. SDSS fought back, eventually closing the gap to 19-17 with less than five minutes to play, but McMath added another try for a 26-17 win.
Today (April 10), the senior girls are at Sullivan Heights, Thursday (April 11) the seniors will be at Earl Marriott and Friday (April 12) the Junior tier 1 will be at Grandview.
Next home games are April 17 with the senior girls hosting Earl Marriott at 4 p.m. at South Park Field; April 18 the senior boys host Lord Tweedsmuir at 4 p.m. at Dennison Park and on Friday, April 19, the Tier 2 Juniors host Frank Hurt at 4 p.m. at South Park Field.
