The South Delta Secondary Tier 1 junior boys rugby team will head to Abbotsford next week in search of a provincial championship.

The Sun Devils beat Lord Tweedsmuir 20-19 on Wednesday (May 22) in the zone final. This is the third straight banner for the Grade 10 squad for the South Fraser Athletic Association.

SDSS will start play at the provincials on Tuesday. An opponent and seeding are still to be determined.

The Tier 1 squad qualified for the South Fraser zone playoffs after a second-place finish in the regular season standings. They were the top scoring, and least scored against team in the regular season.

They hosted Earl Marriott on May 15 at South Park Field where they won a tight, back-and-forth contest which set them up in the zone final against Lord Tweedsmuir.

The Tier 2 juniors qualified for the zone playoffs finishing third in the regular season standings.

Last Tuesday, May 14, the Sun Devils travelled to Richmond to play McMath who were physically dominant.

“We sadly received multiple injuries (12 players missed game time, some knocked out of the game completely) due to getting banged up,” said coach Sean Waymouth. “The loss was very disheartening for our players as it ended their season. The Tier 2 boys had an excellent season where they showed very well and developed significant skills that will help them as they continue in the game in future seasons.”
