Stingrays wrap up swim season with fine showing at provincials

The Ladner Stingrays wrapped up another successful summer swimming season with their year-end potluck at Memorial Park. The social saw a number of swimmers and coaches recognized for their efforts.

The social saw a number of swimmers and coaches recognized for their efforts. Matt Lock received the club's Spirit Award, while Alex LeRoux was winner of the Swimmer's Choice Award. Top Aggregate Award went to Brandon Freiberger and Jacob Bonikwosky was recognized as the Most Improved Swimmer. He began the season at the development level and finished it by recording "A" times and placing fourth at the regionals.

The coaching staff was also honoured for its tireless efforts. They include head coach: Vanessa Clark, assistant head coach: Maddie deLotbiniere-Bassett and assistants Nick Agrignon, Danielle Mageau, Emily Ferguson, Alyssia Hunchak and Francine deLotbiniere-Bassett.

It was Angrignon's final season with the club, ending an 18-year run as a swimmer and a coach. He will be missed by everyone.

In the water, the season was closed out at the B.C. Summer Swimming Association Provincial Championships in Nanaimo.

The meet featured nearly 900 swimmers from across the province. The Stingrays' contingent of 19 athletes helped Fraser South finish first among the eight regions.

The results included: Division one: Ryan McCarthy - 7th 100 free and 11th 50 free.

Division two: Taylor Van Marrewyk- 11th 50 breast; Jemma deFondamiere - 16th 50 breast.

Division three: Jamie Hutton - 8th 50 back and 10th 100 free.

Division four: Storm Leigh deFondamiere - 12th 50 free and 100 back, 13th 100 free; Maya SatoKlemm- 14th 100 free.

Division five: Brandon Freiberger - 2nd 100 free and back, 3rd 50 fly and 4th 50 free.

Division si Sophie Ferguson - 3rd 50 fly and 5th 100 fly; Hannah Gerrard - 18th 100 breast; Ali Gracan - 2nd 50 free and fly, 3rd 100 fly and 4th 100 free; Anneka Hunchak - 8th 200 1M and 10 100 back; Matt Lock - 1st 100 back, 3rd 50 fly, 9th 100 free and 10th 50 free.

Division 7: Alyssia Hunchak - 9th 100 fly, 13th 100 back and 16th 100 free; Danielle Mageau - 9th 100 breast; Bobby Hider - 6th 100 free.

Division eight: Maddie deLotbiniere-Bassett - 10 50 fly, 11 100 free, 12th 50 free.

The Division six girls medley relay of Anneka Hunchak, Hannah Gerrard, Sophie Ferguson and Ali Gracan) took silver.

Hunchak, Gracan and Ferguson also teamed with Brittany Mageau to take gold in the freestyle relay.

Competing on regional relay teams were: Division 1: Ryan McCarthy free: 4th. Division 2: Taylor VanMarrewyk breast 3rd. Division 3: Jamie Hutton back 1st. Division 5: Brandon Freiberger free 1st (provincial meet record). Division 6: Anneka Hunchak back and Ali Gracan free fourth. Division 6: Matt Lock back 1st. Division 7: Danielle Mageau: breast 1st.
