Sun Devils advance, Pacers out

South Delta tops Clayton Heights in OT, while Delta falls to Heritage Woods to end once-promising season

The South Delta Sun Devils are moving on in the Fraser Valley Championships while the Delta Pacers had their senior boys basketball season come to an end Wednesday.

South Delta topped Clayton Heights 67-65 in overtime in Pitt Meadows.

"Down the stretch I think we executed well. We had a lot of energy in the last few minutes of the game and into overtime," said Sun Devils head coach James Johnston.

Johnston. SDSS was down by 11 with about three minutes to go and then "just came alive," he noted.

The Sun Devils will take on number one seed Pitt Meadows tonight.

"They're very talented and they're very deep," said Johnston, noting that if his team can play physical and use its size, "then I think we'll be OK."

SDSS will play either Port Moody or Yale on Monday.

The Fraser Valley Championships move away from a single-loss elimination after the first round.

The Pacers fell to Heritage Woods 71-57 in the tournament's opening round.

"We were ice cold for 40 minutes. We're normally a tremendous offensive team but we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last night. We tried and we tried, but there was just a lid on the basket for us," said Pacers head coach Scott Masse.

"Sometimes basketball is that way. You get the shots you want and you run and you work but it just doesn't go down."

Masse said that overall the season has to be considered a success.

"We came a long way as a group and I think the boys can be really, really proud of how hard they worked and how much they grew as human beings. They were tremendously committed and I'm very proud of them."
