Sun Devils poised to complete perfect regular season

The South Delta Sun Devils will win their final conference game on Friday to complete a perfect regular season.

The South Delta Sun Devils will win their final conference game on Friday to complete a perfect regular season. The only question is: By how many points?

Following a 45-0 destruction of the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday, the province's top ranked "AA" high school football team heads to Vancouver to close out their schedule against the winless Eric Hamber Griffins.

It has been a mighty struggle for the fledgling program playing its first year at a competitive level. Hamber has been outscored 148-6 in four conference games, including a 60-0 loss to Holy Cross back in September.

It means the Sun Devils coaching staff can get a jump on preparing for the team's opening round playoff game next week, likely against the Carson Graham Eagles. However, a decision on when to take the foot off the gas pedal against Hamber will have to be made.

"It definitely presents some different challenges, admits head coach Ray Moon. "We want to execute our game plan like we normally do and not do things that won't help us when you look at the bigger picture. At the same time, it's been a real struggle for them and it doesn't help their program by running up the score."

"We will do what we have to do then focus on getting ready for the playoffs."

The Sun Devils made short work of the Crusaders on a rainy day in Tsawwassen.

The hosts built up a 31-0 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.

It was a big afternoon for senior David Mann, playing for the final time of his career on home soil.

He hauled in a pair of touchdowns from quarterback Kyle Menzies and also rushed for two more. He finished with 125 yards along the ground on just four carries.

Menzies also hooked-up with Jeremy Carmichael for a major, while Shane Dagg had the other touchdown.

It was another terrific outing for the Sun Devils' defence, producing eight turnovers, including four interceptions. Holy Cross was also stopped three times on fourth down gambles.
