Sun Devils top rivals again to win Pacific Academy tourney

The Earl Marriott Mariners must be getting little tired of seeing the South Delta Sun Devils.

The Earl Marriott Mariners must be getting little tired of seeing the South Delta Sun Devils.

The top 10 provincially ranked "AAAA" senior girls volleyball teams met for the fourth time this season on Saturday and once again the Sun Devils came out on top. The latest chapter was the championship match of the 24-school Pacific Academy Tournament in Surrey.

The No. 2 ranked Sun Devils have now beaten the No. 3 Mariners three times in tournament play and once in tier one league action.

"We've had two close matches with them and this was one of them," said South Delta head coach Dan Burgess. "The girls continue to play at a pretty high level as we get closer to the playoffs."

Setter Emma Robinson and libero Emma Glennon were named to the tournament all-star team, while the Devils played without power hitter Christine Howlett who is sidelined with a finger injury. She is expected to miss the upcoming Fraser Valley Championships but should be back in time for the provincials at the end of the month.

Burgess has said since the start of the season that a deep roster is of his squad's greatest strengths and it will certainly be tested in the coming weeks.

"The depth on our team will be key to any success we have this month," he said.

South Delta's final tune-up before the playoffs is this weekend's Red Surge Tournament at Riverside secondary in Port Coquitlam. The Devils round-robin group includes No. 4 Kelowna, No. 5 Riverside, No. 7 McMath and Charles Best.
