Sun Devils win UVic tournament

South Delta senior girls soccer team set to begin Fraser Valley Championship campaign Monday at Winskill turf

The South Delta Sun Devils senior girls soccer team came out on top last month at the annual UVic Umbro Spring Classic Tournament.

The Devils prevailed over Vancouver Island squad Glenlyon Norfolk School in the final in penalty kicks after finishing tied at 1-1.

"We only had 11 players. It was just a battle," said SDSS co-coach Brent Sweeney. "We had girls that had to go home to their club games, we had injuries, players playing out of position."

Abbey Rekis, who actually started the game in net for South Delta, had a second half goal to level the teams at one apiece.

To reach the final South Delta topped Claremont, Kelowna and Burnsview without conceding a goal.

It was the Sun Devils' first time winning the tournament, hosted by the University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer program. Over 20 teams from around the province took part.

With league play now wrapped up, South Delta will open its Fraser Valley Championships campaign Monday at 3: 30 at the Winskill turf field.

Sweeney, who expects the Devils to be ranked one or two heading into the tournament, says the team is excited and ready to go.

"We've got a couple injuries right now but I think the girls are motivated. They've gone through a lot. We've had injuries to overcome and they've done that very well," he says, noting the team is shooting for its 11th straight provincial championships appearance.

South Delta finished league play Wednesday with a 4-0 win over Delta Secondary at Holly Park.

On Monday, the Devils tied Panorama Ridge 1-1. The team finished with an overall record of five wins and a draw with 21 goals for and just two against.
