Trio win medals at lacrosse nationals

A trio of Ladner players came away with medals from last weekend's 2011 Field Lacrosse National Championships. Jonathon Phillips helped B.C. capture the U16 Alumni Cup with a thrilling 11-10 win over Ontario.

Jonathon Phillips helped B.C. capture the U16 Alumni Cup with a thrilling 11-10 win over Ontario.

The two powerhouses dominated the other provinces en route to the championship game.

B.C.produced wins over Manitoba (31-0), Alberta (20-4) and Saskatchewan (156). The hosts lone loss in round-robin play came to Ontario (10-8).

Phillips finished the tournament with six points, including three goals.

Meanwhile, it was also a B.C./Ontario battle for the First Nations Trophy in the U19 Division and this time the east got the best of the west.

B.C., with a roster that included Sam Clare and Matt Messenger, settled for silver after a hard-fought 13-12 loss to Ontario in the championship game.

B.C. had earlier steamrolled to wins over Manitoba (31-0), Alberta (29-4) and Team Atlantic (35-0). Ontario's perfect run also included a 15-12 round-robin win over B.C.

Messenger finished with eight points, including five goals. Clare managed four goals and six points.
