Tsawwassen Karate Club students earn black and brown belts

Teens upgrade to brown and black belts while brother and sister return from Kelowna competition with four medals

It’s been a successful season to date for Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate Club.

Parker Teal (16) passed to Shodan (black belt). He has trained with the club since he was seven-years-old and performed very well in the grading.

Also showing very well in the grading process were Maya Sirton (15) and Brennan Dyck (14) who passed to 3rd Kyu (brown belt).

“Gradings at black and brown belt level are very demanding and are conducted by a panel of examiners certified by the Japan Karate Association,” explained Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate long-time head instructor Graham Mallett. “Students are tested on kihon, demonstration correct techniques with appropriate speed and power; kata, the art form of karate; and kumite, fighting an opponent.”

The Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate Club students Lucas Macaulay (10) and Marisa Macaulay (12) recently travelled to a tournament in Kelowna where they took on competitors from B.C. and Alberta. Lucas captured gold in Kata and Kumite for the Orange Belt Division, while Marisa came home with bronze in the same events for the Green Belt Division.

The club has been training students in Tsawwassen for the past 42 years. Classes are held in the South Park Elementary School gym on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Students aged eight and up are welcome. Enquires can be sent to [email protected].
