Metro Vancouver roads closed: heavy rainfall floods streets

Metro Vancouver will receive 70-90 mm of rainfall by Friday morning
Douglas Road and Still Creek Avenue
The intersection of Douglas Road and Still Creek Avenue was flooded Thursday after heavy rainfall.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver including the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, and West and North Vancouver.

These areas can expect to receive 70-90 mm of rainfall by Friday morning, and the water is already pooling up. In fact, some low-lying areas, such as Still Creek Drive in Burnaby, are already flooded. In addition, this is the second time this week that these areas have been hit with flash flooding.

TransLink is also advising riders that they will have to take a shuttle train between Commercial and VCC-Clark Sky SkyTrain stations due to a track issue.

According to the transit authority, a landslide caused flooding at the station overnight, which therefore prompted the disruption.

Similarly, rainfall warnings are in place for the neighbouring Sea to Sky and Fraser Valley regions, with snowfall warnings for higher elevations. Drive B.C. has issued a warning about treacherous storm conditions on the Coquihalla.

The heavy rains bring with them risk of flooding, including flash floods. Drivers are cautioned to take extra care on the roads.

While this storm is expected to dissipate by Friday, rain remains in the forecast for Vancouver for every single day of the seven-day range.

  • Gilmore Avenue southbound is single lane between Henning Drive/Dawson Street and Still Creek Avenue. The curbside lane is closed. Both northbound lanes are open.
  • Still Creek Avenue is closed from Westminster Avenue to Douglas Road, and west of Gilmore is reduced to single lane traffic
  • Westminster Avenue is closed from Regent Street to Still Creek Avenue.
  • Regent Street is local traffic only as the west portion is flooded up to Westminster Avenue.
