It could have been a lot worse had it not been for the training, manpower and resources of the Delta fire department.

That’s the message conveyed about the local fire service following a huge townhouse complex fire last Thursday on the Surrey-Delta border which threated areas of Delta.

The Surrey fire broke out at around 1 a.m. on July 5 at the complex under construction near 62 Avenue and Scott Road.

Emergency officials feared winds could spread the fire to neighbouring homes as flames could be seen high in the air. Embers spread into Delta side and several homes were damage.

In a post on the North Delta Community Corner Facebook page, Dave McMillan, president of the Delta Firefighters IAFF Local 1763, described how his department had to handle the high-level fire, noting it’s an example of not only the training and ability of Delta firefighters, but also an example of a city that invests in adequate staffing and equipment for its first responders.

“With the potential to lose an entire corner of our community, not to mention Watershed Park, our members, the firefighters of your community responded in the full force that should be expected by the residents.”

Deputy Fire Chief Brad Wilson will make a presentation to council Monday to discuss the incident and the multiple fire threats that were quickly controlled by Delta’s fire department.
