Should the planned casino complex in Ladner be a question on next month’s municipal election ballot?

Despite receiving final approval by council this summer, some opposed to the project have still been calling on the city to put the project to a referendum.

In response to one recent letter writer who asked how the city could add on a question to the ballot, asking a simple yes or no question, whether voters support the casino, staff noted council had given final consideration to permit the construction of the entertainment complex and hotel. The application has been referred to the B.C. Lottery Corporation for final approval.

A council resolution would be required to include a “non-binding community opinion question” on the Oct. 20 ballot, staff noted.

In order to meet the deadlines for ballot design and printing, the council resolution would be required at their next meeting on Monday, Sept. 17.

Delta council had voted 4-2 in favour of granting approval of the Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. $70-million casino/hotel complex, called the Delta Cascades Casino, It’s to be constructed at the Delta Town & Country site. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall with a grand opening in 2020.
