The proposed development on a residential street is located in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Development Permit Area.

A proposed new 40-unit condominium complex on Hunter Road in Tsawwassen moved a step closer to reality following a public hearing on Tuesday.

Council voted to give the application third reading with only councillors Jeannie Kanakos and Lois Jackson opposed, saying that while the project is a good one, the Official Community Plan should be followed and that the application has too many units for the site.

Only a few residents participated in the hearing with the majority expressing opposition regarding the scale of the project.

One resident who spoke in favour described it the “right project, right site at the right time” but another speaker opposed warned it would “tip the apple cart over in a very large way” for the street.

Noting there was always an expectation a multi-family project would be eventually built, Coun. Dylan Kruger said that, on balance, it would be a net positive for the neighbourhood, and that it is largely in compliance with the neighbourhood’s vision.

Coun. Bruce McDonald agreed, describing it as an outstanding project.

The application for the 1200-block of Hunter Road would see five properties consolidated into one parcel in order to develop the four-storey apartment building with two levels of underground parking, accessed from Hunter Road.

An earlier proposal asked for 52 units but the application was revised.

The application requires rezoning and an Official Community Plan amendment, as well as other approvals.

The two-bedroom condos would range from around 1,200 square feet to just over 1,700 square feet.
